Hi Justine! Very informative! I am not a mother but have plenty of friends who are and they are struggling with so much guilt and putting energy into socializing their children… but I wonder how many are able to truly enjoy the parenting experience. This empowers anyone really to get back to the basics. In this time of economic hardship for most people it is the perfect time to step back and question “do things really need to be done this way?” I am glad to hear you are doing well! The whole socialize/socialization thing is such a bizarre thing for folks to focus on! My kids “have social interactions” with plenty of people—the principle difference being that my kids socialize with people of ALL ages and with people who come from ALL walks of life!

I’m not confident that my childrens “peer groups” are necessarily the most qualified kiddos to help inform my children about life! Having a conversation about the merits of peanut butter and jelly with a fellow 6 year old at lunch time OR sharing our picnic with the 60 year old botanists who told cool stories about her trip to the Amazon while we were taking a walk out at the nature preserve…hmmmmmm. I’m gonna call the latter one a “richer” experience!

Brilliant and hilarious. I am considering homeschooling as well although I have a few years to decide. I always love the socialization comment. I tend to ask “Socialize them to what?” Yeesh!

Nicely written–as the mom of a 6 year old who i am certain many “mainstream” sorts are very happy to have safely stashed away in a homeschool trench somewhere, I hear you there. There seems to be the idea that free thinking, free wheeling, status quo questioning children should be immediately squelched. So yeah, I’m putting in the work now…with the idea that i might wind up with a child with radical ideas that she’s not afraid to spout. Besides, the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree
